Privacy Policy
Last updated: 21 October 2026
This policy explains how we handle your personal information when you use the Wayfarer app ("the App"). We've kept it short and plain.
We keep only what we need to record the places you collect and to make the App better. You can use it without an account. Your data is stored securely and encrypted. We never sell your data, show you ads or market to you.
1. Who we are
The App is provided by Appified Ltd (Company No. 09405749, registered in England & Wales), 3 Bushey Way, Beckenham, BR3 6TA.
Appified Ltd is the data controller for the personal information processed through the App. That means we decide how it is used and we're responsible for looking after it. We are registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) under registration reference ZB225697.
Wayfarer is an independent app. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the National Trust, and we don't share your information with the National Trust.
2. What we collect
- Your location. Only if you allow it, and only while the App is open, it uses your phone's location to show places near you and to check you in. To find nearby places, the App sends your position to our servers, which use it to answer and don't keep it. When you check in, we store the position your phone reported at that moment with the check-in, as the record that you were there. The App does not track your location in the background.
- Your collection. The places you check in at, when, and the badges you earn.
- A random ID for the App on your phone. So you can use Wayfarer without an account, the App creates a random ID the first time you open it and keeps it on your phone. Your collection is stored against that ID. It isn't linked to your name or email.
- Your email address, if you create an account. We use it to send you sign-in codes and to identify your account. There are no passwords. When you create an account, the collection you built as a guest moves into it.
- Usage and technical information. How the App is used (such as the screens you open, the places you look at, check-ins and badges earned), crash and error reports, and your device type, operating system and app version. This is linked to your random ID or your account, so we can fix problems and make the App better. Our analytics provider may estimate a rough location, such as your country or city, from your IP address.
We don't collect your name, contacts or photos, and the App has no adverts. We don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
3. Why we use your information (legal basis)
- To provide the App (contract). Showing places near you, recording your check-ins and badges, keeping your collection and journal, and signing you in.
- To check check-ins are genuine (legitimate interests). Keeping the position you checked in from, so a collection reflects real visits.
- To run and improve the App (legitimate interests). Usage analytics, fixing bugs, keeping the App secure and preventing misuse.
- To meet legal obligations. Where the law requires us to keep or disclose information.
4. Who we share it with
- Our service providers, who host the App's servers and database, handle sign-in and send sign-in emails (Amazon Web Services), and provide analytics and error reports (PostHog). They act only on our instructions and must keep your information secure.
- Apple draws the map in the App on iPhone, under Apple's privacy policy, so it receives the area of the map you're looking at.
- Where required by law, or to protect the rights and safety of our users or others.
We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information.
5. Where it's stored and how we keep it safe
Our servers and database are in London (UK). Our analytics provider stores data in the EU. Your information is encrypted on its way to us and where it's stored. On your phone, your sign-in is kept in the phone's secure storage.
No system is completely secure, but we take care to protect your information and to limit access to it.
6. How long we keep it
- Your account and collection: until you delete your account.
- A guest collection: on our servers, linked only to your phone's random ID, so it's there when you come back. If you uninstall the App without creating an account, the App loses that ID and the collection can no longer be reached. To have it deleted, create an account and then delete it (see below), or contact us.
- Server logs: deleted automatically after a month.
- Analytics: up to 24 months.
7. Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time in the App: open the Me tab and tap Delete account. This permanently deletes your account, your email address, your check-ins and your badges straight away. You can also ask us to do it by emailing wayfarer@appifieduk.com.
8. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct or delete it;
- ask us to restrict or stop using it, or object to how we use it;
- receive your information in a portable format.
To use any of these rights, email wayfarer@appifieduk.com. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
9. Children
Wayfarer is made for days out, including with family. Children under 13 should use it with a parent or guardian, and we don't knowingly create accounts for children under 13. If you think a child has given us their information without a parent's involvement, please contact us and we'll delete it.
10. Links
The App and this website may link to other sites. Those sites have their own privacy policies, which we're not responsible for.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it last changed, and we'll let you know in the App about any significant changes.
